In this article, we\u2019re going to focus on the concept of pacing, and how to apply it to writing your VSL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an upcoming article, I\u2019m going to walk you through an entire VSL outline to help you apply your pacing correctly, so don\u2019t be concerned about having to figure out something that it can take screenwriters and copy editors decades to master. We\u2019re all about sharing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webinarjam.com\/webinar-best-practices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">webinar best practices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marketing strategy, and everything that encompasses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, we\u2019ll keep the lessons short and sweet so you can actually get through them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we\u2019re just getting familiar with the concept in order to recognize its importance in the success of your VSL, because if your VSL has a high bounce rate (people clicking away before the video has finished), it\u2019s almost always due to a problem with pacing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Just how important is pacing to your VSL?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It cannot be overstated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without effective pacing you will, literally, lose your audience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re paid $15 to see the latest Transformers movie and it sucks (the previous disasters should have been a clue), you\u2019re probably going to tough it out and opt to complain about it to your friends later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, if you\u2019re watching a VSL and you get bored, you\u2019re going to click away and go down the YouTube rabbit hole, instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, your VSL needs to be full-on action-packed content from start to finish, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>WRONG!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPacing\u201d is not a synonym for \u201cinteresting\u201d or \u201centertaining\u201d. Pacing involves more than just putting your best content front and center. If boring your audience is going to switch them off, frantically bashing them over the head is just going to make them dizzy and irritable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re writing copy for a lead capture page or an ad, it\u2019s not a bad idea to put forward your best feature, best benefit, and best testimonial. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a VSL is a different beast. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A VSL needs to engage, generate interest, educate, and close the sale \u2013 there\u2019s a lot going in this marketing form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The type of pacing you need to apply to your VSL is something called\u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Rising Action (The key to building tension)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proper pacing applied to a VSL does more than just keep the audience engaged. It also gets people into a state of mind where they\u2019re willing to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spend money<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2975\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/spendmoney.png\" alt=\"Proper pacing applied to a VSL keeps the audience engaged AND gets people into a state of mind where THEY WANT to spend money.\" width=\"1400\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/spendmoney.png 1400w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/spendmoney-600x386.png 600w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/spendmoney-1024x658.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/spendmoney-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/spendmoney-696x447.png 696w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/spendmoney-1068x687.png 1068w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/spendmoney-653x420.png 653w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think I\u2019m assigning too much power to something as seemingly innocuous as pace, then you\u2019ve already forgotten how critical it is to every form of popular media. Let\u2019s look at a universally recognized example\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I could have chosen from any one of a million different movies, but I\u2019ve selected this one because there\u2019s a fair chance you\u2019ve seen it plenty of times and you\u2019ll know about the scenes I\u2019m referring to.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movie opens with Indiana being poisoned and engaging in a frantic battle to get his hands on the antidote. Indiana survives and escapes on a plane. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The audience get a few moments to catch their breath and then the pilot jumps out the plane, taking with him the last parachute.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indiana and his friends survive by making creative use of an inflatable boat and find themselves in the mysterious Pankot Palace.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tension never truly goes because the audience senses that something is wrong with this place, but they\u2019re given a little time to get comfortable again before someone tries to assassinate Indiana.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not going to recap the entire story, but can you see the pattern in the pacing of the first 30-40 minutes?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not constant action crammed into every second. The moments of excitement are punctuated by calm, allowing the audience to catch their breath and process what they\u2019ve just seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The return to base level heart rates also makes the action, when it does kick off again, more impactful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the movie unfolds, that pattern continues, the tension and the stakes gradually increasing, until it culminates with a thrilling mine cart ride and a standoff on a rickety rope bridge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is \u201crising action\u201d at its best. Always raising the stakes, but following peak moments of action with brief periods of calm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you recognize the \u201crising action\u201d phenomenon, you\u2019ll start to see it everywhere. Movies, music, books, video games\u2026 the best examples in their respective genres, almost without exception, are carefully paced to keep audiences hooked from start to finish.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Pacing Your VSL<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the \u201crising action\u201d technique is also key to a successful (meaning, profitable) VSL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key moments in your VSL should be punctuated by moments of relative calm, during which you gradually ramp up the tension, before hitting your audience with yet another bombshell. All the time, the action should be rising, building up to your Call to Action (CTA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are lots of different ways to achieve this effect but, as an example, consider the moment when you reveal the price of your offer. It could be an amazing price point, representing incredible value, and offering the lowest ever price for your product, but if you just drop it into the conversation abruptly and casually, you\u2019re not going to create that \u201crising action\u201d effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2976\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/call-to-action.png\" alt=\"Action should rise and build up to your Call to Action\" width=\"1400\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/call-to-action.png 1400w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/call-to-action-600x386.png 600w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/call-to-action-1024x658.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/call-to-action-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/call-to-action-696x447.png 696w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/call-to-action-1068x687.png 1068w, https:\/\/www.genesisdigital.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/call-to-action-653x420.png 653w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/>Instead, what you do is\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk about the cost of competing high-priced products. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then you talk about how much your product usually sells for. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, you suggest an attractive price that offers great value, just for today. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You immediately follow that up with the real price, one that is even lower. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, you announce the shipping is free, the product comes with a 100% money-back guarantee, and if they order now you\u2019ll give them a second product for free that they can gift to a friend.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you see how that works?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The viewer really wants your awesome product, but they\u2019re wondering if they\u2019re going to be able to afford it. You build the tension by showing numbers that are much higher than your price point and, as you gradually lower it, the audience becomes more and more invested in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The price point is now within their budget, yet you\u2019re still slashing it lower and lower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, you announce the actual, amazing price for today \u2013 a huge bombshell that has the audience in a lather. And then you peak the action by throwing in the guarantees, the bonuses, and the free shipping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s \u201c<\/span><b>rising action<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use it correctly in your VSL and your audience will be stuck to their seats, like bubble gum to your jeans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very soon, I\u2019ll be publishing an article that takes you through the steps of a well-constructed, profitable VSL that has \u201crising action\u201d built into its DNA.
